Transit
Oriented Development Page
Structures Unlimited, Inc. (SUI), like other
forward thinking development firms, understands the
challenges of life in today's dense urban and suburban-metropolitan
environments. In reaching for a higher level of residential
design that is environmentally sustainable, socially
equitable, and that contributes to both economic development
and quality of life, SUI is focusing on Transit-Oriented
Development (TOD), as a comprehensive development approach
centered on transit hubs and infrastructure.
Why
TOD?
Commuters in many regions of the country are increasingly
frustrated with congestion and arduous commutes. Concern
over sprawl and the loss of open space is growing. Air
pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and pressure on
oil supplies are in the public spotlight. The complications
of family life in auto-dependent suburbs increasingly
lead to disillusionment. At the same time, rising housing
prices in many metropolitan areas have limited the residential
choices and homeownership opportunities for a large
segment of the middle class.
Structures
TOD Approach
We "retrofit" existing neighborhoods and develop
new communities by increasing the options available
to residents including the type of dwelling they buy
or lease, the modes of transportation they use, and
the places they shop. This is the SUI approach. Currently,
we are engaged in several Transit Oriented Developments
throughout the State of Maryland.
